Owner & Yoga Therapist Susie Weigel (C-IAYT, E-RYT & YACEP) holds a Master of Science degree in Yoga Therapy from Maryland University of Integrative Health. Susie is enthusiastic about helping individuals learn yoga "tools" to improve functional movement, reduce pain, manage symptoms of common health conditions, and restore quality of life.
Prior to becoming a yoga therapist, Susie taught English and German in secondary and post-secondary schools in Alabama for 19 years. Her experience as a public-school teacher and yoga practitioner sparked in her a desire to bring the transformative and healing power of yoga to underserved populations. She is trained in trauma-informed yoga and her experience includes working with seniors, athletes, individuals in addiction recovery, special needs youth, incarcerated women and correctional staff.
Susie came to yoga by chance, taking it up in Fall of 2015 as a complement to her “free” exercise regimen at the time: running. She hoped to stretch and relieve stress but was initially skeptical of yoga. After attending her first class, she experienced a shift—emotionally, mentally, and physically—and her skepticism vanished. She earned her RYT 200 certification in 2017 and decided to turn to yoga full-time in 2019.
Susie served as Program Director for Prison Yoga Project - Alabama from 2019-2023, and she continues to promote their mission. During this time, she led and co-facilitated a 12-week pilot program at Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women. The success of the pilot resulted in program growth, and despite pandemic challenges, PYP-Alabama offered in-person and virtual programs for Tutwiler residents and staff members. With the generous support of grant funding from the Central Alabama Community Foundation (CACF) and Elmore County Community Foundation (ECCF), PYP-AL collaborated with the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) to develop innovative program delivery for both staff and residents of ADOC facilities. The Give Back Yoga Foundation featured her for her work in Alabama.
Personally, yoga helped Susie cope with grief, stress, and the daily ups and downs of work and family life. Her yoga journey also set her career path in a new direction. As a Yoga Therapist, Susie provides individualized, therapeutic yoga practices to private clients and the groups she is currently serving—setting them on a path toward improved well-being. Virtual and in-person options are available!
